Many people know it can be done differently, but not how. As a result, students often experience fear and uncertainty, unsafe situations sometimes arise, and people lose the pleasure that horseback riding once brought them.
The Freestyle Academy offers training and courses based on natural behavior, learning ability and biomechanics of the horse. In this way, you will always learn to understand your horse on the basis of knowledge so that you can help him optimally.
The Freestyle system is made up of three different techniques, all of which are underpinning riding.
The first is loose working, where you learn to use body language to gain control of a loose horse in a fenced-off 15 x 15 meter area. You do this based on communication that is understandable to the horse, so you begin to recognize his signals and learn to see what he needs from you in order to understand you.
The second part is ground work, where the horse wears a training halter and is connected to you via a 4.5 meter leadrope. You now combine the same body language from loose work with aids through the halter. The exercises underlie all the daily things you require of the horse, such as putting it in the stable, taking it to pasture, as well as tolerating treatments from the farrier or veterinarian in a calm manner. When clarity is established regarding the execution of daily actions it gives enormous peace of mind for both horse and human.
The double long lines are the third component and is also called the bridge to riding. Here the horse learns not only rein aids on the bridle, but also to walk in a riding-type balance necessary to carry a rider. Meanwhile, the rider learns to remotely influence the horse in that balance, improving rein handling and preparing both optimally for work under saddle.
In riding, techniques and principles from all three components are reflected within the Freestyle system. It is an integral whole, making training logical and understandable.
Its logical structure also makes the Freestyle system ideally suited for training young horses, solving behavioral problems and introducing a new generation of young riders and amazons to horses.
Freestyle Academy courses are given from the home base in Ruinerwold: the FSA. Training courses you follow there in principle with your own horse, you can combine different areas of study in the directions of riding, behavior and rehabilitation.
Starting in 2023, the Level 1 instructor training, in which the foundation is laid in both own skill and teaching the 3 techniques from the ground up, will also be offered at a number of locations around the country. There, school horses will be used as standard, making the training more accessible to anyone who wants to develop as a trainer and instructor. The locations as of 2023 are as follows:
- FSA Ruinerwold (only with your own horse)
- Kootwijkerbroek (Saturday)
- Oudkarspel (Friday)
- Pijnacker (Sunday)
- Amstelveen (Monday)
- Loon op Zand (Monday)
- Well (Limburg) (Sunday)
At the remote locations, instructor training is offered primarily, and in some cases, the 3-day basic course specifically for individuals.
The level 1 instructor training consists of 10 teaching days plus an additional exam day. The cost is € 2,499, - including teaching materials and use of school horses at the locations. Any purchase of training materials and exam costs (€ 150,-) are exclusive.
